Beginner’s Guide to the Keto Diet

What is the Keto Diet?

The keto diet is a low carb, high fat and protein diet that contribute to weight loss and improving many health problems such as diabetes.

How does it work?

The keto diet focuses on reducing your carb intake and replacing it with calories from protein and fat. By eating fewer carbs and more protein, your body produces ketones (an energy source) from fat. The body then enters a metabolic state called ketosis. The fat which is now transformed into ketones is transferred to your brain to develop energy and burn off fat at a faster rate.

What types of food do I eat?

The number one rule is the less carbs, the better! Keto diet staples include meat, seafood, eggs, healthy oils, low carb vegetables, high fat dairy and nuts. Your main focus is to consume foods that have healthy fats, low carbs and plenty of antioxidants. For the keto diet to work best, make sure to eat a maximum of 20 grams of carbs a day for your body to reach ketosis.

What drinks are keto friendly?

Many of your favorite drinks will be off limits for this diet such as alcohol, soda and juice. Water is one of the very few options since it has no carbs. What kinds of food do I avoid?

Steer clear of foods that are high carb, highly processed and high in sugar and starch. Some foods to avoid are fruits, grains, cereal, sugary food, candy, beans and potatoes. Make sure that any product you consume isn’t over 20 grams of carbs and has a modest amount of protein. Be wary of foods with titles such as “low fat”, “diet” and “sugar free” since they usually have high amounts of carbs and are highly processed. Food labels will become your new best friend.

Is the Keto diet right for me?

Like any other diet, it is best to consult with your doctor before starting. Most people who implement the keto diet do it for weight loss since this diet burns off fat without causing fatigue like many other diets do because ketones produce energy. While on keto your body produces less insulin which may help treat diabetes and lower your blood pressure. There are also health benefits to your skin by cutting off eating highly processed foods which cause acne. This diet is relatively safe and, like many other diets, takes some getting used to, consistency and time before seeing results.
